Centrelink Payments as an Australian permanent resident and Australian Visa holder, you are eligible for social security benefits through Centrelink, such as family tax and childcare subsidies. Unlike most other social security programs, two years are required before one is eligible to receive social security benefits such as disability, unemployment, and student compensation provided by Australia’s Social Security Department.

Medicare Coverage A significant advantage for Australian Visa holders (permanent residents) is healthcare eligibility. Being Australia’s permanent resident, you are eligible for the Medicare government-run health insurance program. A Medicare card is provided that entitles the cardholder to seek free treatment at a public hospital, consult with local general practitioners, and purchase subsidized medication.

Citizenship Eligibility You are entitled to apply for Australian Citizenship after four years of permanent residency. Kids of Australian permanent residents born in Australia are considered Australian citizens. It is a huge advantage because they eventually reap the greatest advantages of Australian education and healthcare from day one.

Job Service Agency(JSA) Facility as an Australia visa holder (permanent resident), you are registered with the Job Service Agents (JSA) attached to Centrelink where you are encouraged with the work search, with opportunities to develop the qualifications and qualified job openings as your case manager shares from time to time. The facilities including Wi-Fi internet, land phone, photocopier are available at the JSA.

Education Benefits Education subsidy is available to PR visa holders under various state schemes. School tuition is heavily subsidized almost free, domestic fees apply for degree services, and post-citizenship access to the Higher Education Loans Program (HELP) and associated incentives for upfront payments. State-run services like Skills Victoria offering Certificate and Diploma Level services are available to permanent residents.

Privilege to Sponsor Relatives Permanent residents may also sponsor their relatives. However, this is only possible if the applicant meets the pre-requisites of residency and assistance.

First Home Owner Grant as an Australia PR Visa holder you are entitled to the First Home Owner Grant (FHOG) scheme where you receive a $7,000 bonus and stamp duty waiver when you buy a first home in Australia. Moreover, the limitations levied by the Foreign Investment Review Board on the purchasing of residential property no longer apply (you are no longer legally considered a foreigner)

Credit rating Once you are an Australian permanent resident, your credit rating increases tremendously. You would be best positioned to accept most loans, including but not limited to home loans, car loans, personal loans, credit cards, etc.

Skilled Independent Visa

(Subclass 189)

The Independent Visa (Subclass 189) is a valid open visa for people with the appropriate qualifications and in-demand skills to fill Australia’s skill gap.

To apply, applicants must have a minimum of 65 points under the point assessment criteria. To be eligible, applicants should be under 45 years of age, ideally, be Bachelor degree holder, show strong credentials and/or expertise in an industry on the Qualified Profession Lists – MLTSSL, Medium, and Long-term Strategic Skills List, and being professional / highly skilled in English.

Subclass 189: Australian Visa Specific criteria

Applicants (or their partners) must be able to meet specific visa requirements for age, English language ability, profession, education, health, and character.

The present Professional Independent Visa (Subclass 189) cutoff is 65.

On 1 July 2012, the skilled migration program moved to a new online system called “Skill Select,” allowing prospective skilled migrants to evaluate their skills and education through the respective approved skill assessing body, receive the appropriate English language grading level and apply an Expression of Interest (EOI) through creating an immi account login.

Additional New Points Introduced from 16th November 2019

  1. 10 Additional Partners Points, with partner skills, from the same Occupation list, assessed by relevant skills assessing body. Earlier these were 5 Points
  2. 5 Additional Points for Partner achieving Competent English Level, Earlier There Were No Points
  3. 10 Additional Points for Single Applicant, earlier there were no Points
  4. 10 Additional points if your spouse/de-facto partner is a Citizen or Permanent Resident of Australia, earlier there were no Points
  5. 10 Additional Points for Specialist education viz Masters by research or Doctorate from an Australian University, earlier there were 5 Points.
  6. 15 Additional Points for Regional Nomination

Once an EOI is submitted, Australian employers, state, and territorial governments and the Federal Government can view these details and then extend a visa application invitation. The documents must be submitted within 60 days to formalize the visa application. Post this the Visa approval can come within 12 months depending on the load on the visa systems as per the Global visa timelines.

Australian Skilled Independent Visa (Subclass 189) Benefits

Skilled Independent Visa (Subclass 189) entitles you to become an Australian permanent resident. PR Visa holders are allowed to migrate with family, Live and work indefinitely, become eligible for Medical and Education subsidies, and get an opportunity to apply for Australian citizenship.



NATIONAL ENGLISH PREP TEST (NEPT)

State Sponsored Skilled Nominated Visa

(Sub Class 190)

Australian Visa rules are laid out by The Department of Immigration and Border Protection(DIBP) for the State Sponsorship Skilled Nominated Category (Subclass 190).

To apply, applicants must have a minimum of 65 points under the point assessment criteria. To be eligible, applicants should be under 45 years of age, ideally, be Bachelor degree holders, show strong credentials and/or expertise in an industry on the State Skill shortage list, Short term skill occupation list(STSOL), and being professional / highly skilled in English.

Subclass 190: Australian Visa Basic Requirements

The state would have an overview of an applicant’s Skill-Select profile, created through the immi account login. The state would then match up the Applicant’s details in the EOI with its Skills shortage list, grant 5 points to the total points tally, and issue an invitation for filing the Nomination. The applicant would commit to a two-year stay in the Sponsoring State as the main requirement of this category of Australian Visa.

Post this the Visa approval can come within 7-9 months depending on the load on the visa systems as per the Global visa timelines.

State-Sponsored Skilled Nominated Visa (Subclass 190) Benefits

Subclass 190 entitles you to become an Australian permanent resident by granting 5 additional points. State-Sponsored Visa holders are allowed to migrate with family, Live and work in the state permanently (for a minimum of 2 years in the state and then upgrade to Federal PR Visa), become eligible for Medical and Education subsidies and get an opportunity to apply for Australian citizenship.

Regional (Provisional) Visa 

(Subclass 491)

Australian Visa rules have undergone a major change in the second half of 2019 where the Skilled Nominated Visa ceased to exist on 16th November 2019

new Subclass 491 was introduced to give prominence to the Regional Areas. To apply, applicants must have a minimum of 65 points under the point assessment criteria. To be eligible, applicant should be under 45 years of age, ideally be Bachelor degree holder, show strong credentials and/or expertise in an industry on the Regional Skill shortage list, Short term skill occupation list (STSOL), and being professional / highly skilled in English.

Subclass 491: Australian Visa Basic Requirements

Region would have an overview of an applicant Skill-Select profile, created through the immi account login. Region would then matchup the Applicant’s details in the EOI with its Skills shortage list, grant 15 additional points to the total points tally and issue an invite for filing the Nomination. Applicant would commit to a three year stay in the Sponsoring Region as a main requirement of this category of Australian Visa and can stay in Region for 5 years.

The present Skilled Work Regional(Provisional) Visa (Subclass 491) cutoff is 65.

On Nov 16, 2019, the Regional migration program transited from Subclass 489 to Subclass 491, Australian Home affairs office has put renewed focus on Regional areas development. The application still goes through “Skill Select,” and the prospective skilled migrants to evaluate their skills and education through the respective approved skill assessing body, receive the appropriate English language grading level and apply an Expression of Interest (EOI) through creating an immi account login.

Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) Visa (Subclass 491)Benefits

Subclass 491 entitles you to become an Australian permanent resident by granting 15 additional points. Regional Sponsored Visa holders are allowed to migrate with family, Live and work in the state permanently (for a minimum of 3 years in the Region and then upgrade to Subclass 191 PR Visa), become eligible for Medical and Education subsidies, and get an opportunity to apply for Australian citizenship.
